3 Ways To Be A Better Human Being

  1. thank you photoSMILE: Smiling is something that is so easy and has the ability to instantly change a person’s mood. It has been said that smiling used less muscles than are used to frown so by that logic it is EASIER to smile than to frown. Now, I am not saying to walk around with a smile plastered to your face but when you encounter another person passing by, flash a simple smile (nothing intense, you’re not getting engaged to this person). In a world that is so dark and filled with hate and judgment, a smile is like a light at the end of the tunnel, smiling is contagious and is key to being a better human being. Have you ever found smiling at a baby without intentionally making the effort? I bet you have, try and make smiling apart of your daily routine, and before you know it you’ll be on your way to smiling like a baby and feeling like a better human being. Something that has always resonated with me is a saying that my grandmother always says, “fabisina-punim” which means “sour-face” in Yiddish. She will look at one of us and say “what is with that fabisina punim? You have such a beautiful face, don’t waste it”. Solution: SMILE, it’s easy and it will actually make YOU feel better and look better, that seems like a +1 for reasons to be a better human being.
  2. Say THANK YOU: Take a moment and think about the last “random” person that you thanked. Can you remember the last time you said “thank you” to the maintenance staff at your school, place of work, doctor’s office, etc.? I asked 15 people this same question and only 1 person could recall the last time they randomly thanked someone for their work. I am one of those people who goes around thanking everyone for everything, to be that is one of the easiest ways that I can be a better human being as I go about my daily life.  I go overboard sometimes and I have been on the receiving end of some very awkward looks, but 99% of the time I get an overwhelming outpour of gratitude. Saying “thank you” to the people who are cleaning up after you, making beverages for you, bringing food to you, etc. is frankly something that is so incredibly easy and yet is rarely done. Solution: Say “THANK YOU” to those who you wouldn’t normally take the time to thank, they deserve it, just like you do. Hopefully by this point you are starting to realize how easy being a better human being is.
  3. SPEAK UP: Do you know what is the easiest way to stop a bully? SPEAK UP. Now I am not talking about the person who is being bullied because being on the receiving end of a bully is a dark, silent hell. It is the responsibility of those around that person to speak up. Bullying is any type of unwarranted personal attacks which unfortunately vary in human interaction/ interpersonal relationships. If you see someone who is clearly in distress it is your job as a human being to care for that person and stand up for them because that is what someone who cares about being a better human being does. All too often people just observe and stand by without saying a word for fear that it will be “awkward” or hide behind the excuse “it’s none of my business”. It is your business, seeing another human being in distress is your business, and life is awkward; deal with it. Solution: STEP UP AND SPEAK UP, I  guarantee you’ll be a better human being in the eyes of that person. It’s as simple as that, if you can breathe you can be a better human being.
