(Part 2, Startups 6-10)

Last Tuesday we took a little stroll down memory lane by revisiting some of the top startups of 2007 and checking out how successful they are in 2013. So far we have had all success stories with Twitter, Dropbox, Airbnb, Zynga and Tumblr, so let’s see how the next 5 on our list have been doing these past 6 years!

Gilt is the first startup from 07 we are going to look at. Incase you have been living under a rock; Gilt is an online shopping community with over 6 million members! Once registered, you can view new sales usually lasting 36 to 48 hours which feature merchandise. 6 Million members isn’t a bad look.

Waze is a turn-by-turn GPS based navigation application, which allows user submitted route details, such as accidents, and travel times. In 2013 Waze is still going strong winning the Best Overall Mobile Application award at the Mobile World Congress awards. In June Google bought Waze for 1.03 billion dollars, which allows each of Waze’s employees, about 100 or so, to receive 1.2 million dollars! Not to shabby

Twilio is a cloud communications company that allows developers to programmatically make and receive phone calls and send texts using web service. The services are accessed over and HTTP address and billed based on usage. In October of 2012 more than 150 K Developers used this service!

Everyone knows our next 2007 startup, Living Social! How could you not? This deal of the day website offers discounted gift certificates to many national and local businesses. While Living Social is still alive and kicking, it has not been without its fair share of problems. In 2012 a class action lawsuit was filed against the company in regards to the expiry dates on the coupons. And in April it was announced that the Living Social database was hacked, affecting up to its 50 million users!

10 Gen is a software company that develops and provides commercial support for the open source databases and database that stores data in JSON like documents with flexible schemas. While most of us probably have no idea what any of this means, the main takeaway is that in 2012 10 Gen received 81 million dollars in funding and was named top software company in 2012.

AppNexus is a company that provides a platform specializing in real-time online advertising. As of 2010, the company auctions more than four billion ads per day on a real-time basis. AppNexus offers online auction infrastructure and technology for data management, optimization, financial clearing and support for directly negotiated advertising campaigns. As of February 2013 the company has raised over $140 million in financing, with a $75 million funding round in January 2013!
